  42. Word from inside DEC says the company is pretty much "paralyzed"
  43. because of the reorganization into business units and the fact that people
  44. are not in place.  One senior middle manager estimated the reorganization has
  45. cost DEC six months.

  50. DEC has successfully tested an operational 1,000 SpecMark Alpha multi-
  51. processing prototype, developed using gallium arsenide.  And with
  52. the industry still digesting the earliest 64 bit technology, DEC's
  53. Advanced Technology Development engineers are supposedly working
  54. on a prototype 128-bit RISC architecture already under the code name
  55. "MRISC."

  60. To help its VAX or Mips users move to Alpha platforms, DEC has
  61. developed binary translation tools which can recompile programs for
  62. Alpha without source code.  A penalty is translated binaries do not run as
  63. fast as programs compiled from source for Alpha - DEC says
  64. performance degradation is around 50%.

  67. **NET VIEWS ALPHA ALONE ISN'T GOING TO SAVE DEC

  69. DEC does not plan to offer OSF/1 on its larger systems, and will not have
  70. SMP support for OSF/1 for quite some time.  HP, on the other hand, has
  71. made clear its single-OS strategy for HP-UX across its entire line of
  72. systems.  DEC needs to work on its trade-up programs, which are
  73. horrendous.  While announcing new systems, DEC sells older systems
  74. and charges up to 30% premiums to upgrade to a newer box.

  92. One third of all growth in the European market was split between HP and
  93. IBM.  IDC ranks HP as the number one Unix vendor in Europe, and says
  94. that firm increased its lead over second place Sun Microsystems during
  95. 1992.

  100. IBM has licensed HP Open Mail X.400 Message Transfer Agent (MTA)
  101. and other standards-based messaging technology from HP.  IBM will
  102. select components of HP OpenMail, which run on HP-UX, and enhance
  103. and remarket them as an X.400 solution for the RS/6000.  As more users
  104. buy enterprise wide X.400 backbones, IBM may be aiming to make a big,
  105. open systems messaging splash, using HP technology.

  110. Rumors are circulating about Microsoft's porting of NT to Sparc.
  111. Microsoft said it continues to appraise the situation but added that NT is
  112. more likely to appear on an HP PA-RISC chip before Sparc.

  117. RISC systems revenues rose 45% last year to $17.5 billion.  HP's PA-
  118. RISC architecture retained its leadership position with a $1 billion lead
  119. over Sun's Sparc.  Last year, HP received a 40% increase in RISC
  120. revenue and an 80% increase in units shipped.  This year HP should
  121. benefit from users fleeing IBM.  It gives IBM little chance of achieving
  122. its stated goal of becoming the Unix workstation and server leader by the
  123. end of 1994.

  130. ** IBM SETS 64-CPU RS/6000 PARALLEL MACHINE FOR
  131. FEBRUARY 2

  133. IBM has a busy February lined up with mainframe kickers expected
  134. February 9, and AS/400 models February 16.  The company has inked in
  135. February 2 for an array of new RS/6000's.  Expected is improved system
  136. performance and graphics flexibility for the mainstream Power Stations
  137. and Servers, and a scalable, parallel processing system.  This will be an
  138. eight-to  64-processor machine with a theoretical 6 GFLOPS.

  141. ** IBM UPS PARALLEL PACE

  143. IBM is readying its first parallel processing machine for the commercial
  144. world, a database engine that will be announced in the second quarter.
  145. Initial price points are expected to be about $15,000 per MIP, compared
  146. with a list price of about $100,000 per MIPS (discounted to $55,000 per
  147. MIPS) for a traditional mainframe.  IBM's parallel processing plan
  148. includes - Entry level, 1993, form 4 to 100 CPUs.  Highly parallel, 1995-
  149. 1996, up to 500 CPUs.  Massively parallel, 1997 - 2000, unknown
  150. number of CPUs.

  165. Computer Associates International Inc. said last week it had struck a deal
  166. with IBM to port CA-Unicenter for Unix to IBM's RS/6000.  Slated for
  167. general availability early next year, the systems management software
  168. will also run on Unix platforms from HP and Sun.

  177. Financial results include; Mainframe revenue fell 12% for the year.
  178. PC's down by 15%. Software rose 5.8%.  Non hardware sales, which
  179. include consulting, software and leasing hardware, accounted for 48% of
  180. IBM's 1992 revenue.  The new AS/400 F models are expected to better
  181. the E models price/performance by 30%.  The RS/6000s sell most
  182. strongly in accounts that already have some IBM gear.  Analyst say "HP
  183. is beating them up in the commercial marketplace."

  193. Intergraph has wheeled out new families of its computer-aided design,
  194. manufacturing and engineering workstations and servers based on its
  195. RISC C400 Clipper.  The series 2700, Series 6700 and Series 6800
  196. workstation and servers will support NT as well as Unix.    Prices range
  197. from $14,900 to $50,000 for workstations and $12,500 to $70,000 for
  198. servers.  The company has not made good on its promise to offer OSF/1.

  209. and NCR staff will work together on upgrades for existing Teradata
  210. installations, but the NCR 3600 will take precedence from now on.

  218. hardware configuration needed to achieve such fault resilience - but only
  219. if you buy NCR hardware.  The product, called LifeKeeper, requires the
  220. use of a midrange system 3000 and is priced  from $6,000 to $30,000.

  229. Silicon Graphics upped the ante in the technical computing market today
  230. with the introduction of a line of advanced graphics super computers said
  231. to be 10 times more powerful than any previous SGI system.  Along with
  232. the Onyx  line of graphics super computers, SGI is rolling out a $35,000
  233. Indigo 2 Extreme workstation, which is scheduled to ship this quarter
  234. with a 100MHz CPU.

  259. Sun Microsystems will be increasing its attack into the IBM installed
  260. commercial base with Emphasys Software putting its Cross/36 migration
  261. tool on Sparc machines running both Solaris 1.1 and 2.1.  It will provide
  262. true source code compatibility and allow applications to be developed on
  263. either platform.  The S/36 market is thought to be prime for rightsizing.
  264. The new SparcClassic is being offered as an exemplary commercial
  265. development platform because of its price point.

  270. **SUN TOOL WILL HELP PORT WINDOWS PROGRAMS TO
  271. SOLARIS

  273. SunSelect is preparing for a mid-year release of interface software that
  274. will permit applications written for Microsoft Windows to run on its
  275. Solaris 2.0 operating system.  This technology will eventually make it
  276. possible for users to run off the shelf Windows applications that can be
  277. purchased at retail software outlets.

  282. Sun PR folks like to hype 2.x's multithreaded kernel as dramatically
  283. increasing system performance.  Unfortunately, Sun is still not bundling a
  284. threads library with Solaris, so you can't create programs to take advantage
  285. of all that dramatic performance.  End users won't notice much
  286. difference, but for system administrators moving to 2.1 means a move
  287. from BSDisms to SVR4isms and a short, but steep learning curve.

  306. Reports filtered out of the latest MacWorld about an Apple Computer
  307. project, code named Cat in the Hat, that aims to port the Apple ToolBox,
  308. the source of the Mac interface, over to IBM's AIX in six months, to HP-
  309. UX in nine months and to Sun Sparc machines after that.

  314. A year after outlining its client/server strategy, Tandem this week will
  315. launch a series of software products that support cooperative processing
  316. between Tandem's fault tolerant computers and a wide array of desktop
  317. machines.  Tandem's C/S tool kit ties Tandem's proprietary Guardian
  318. system to a wide range of clients, including Unix, OS/2, MS-DOS and
  319. Macintosh clients.

  324. A survey showed several benefits to users, including better access to data,
  325. easier use of applications and overall productivity boosts.  Respondents
  326. said that client/server applications have improved developers'
  327. productivity, which in turn translated to improved application quality and
  328. better customer service.
